i grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Currently I am finishing up an international MBA course at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
Other than the recent time in Beijing, I have seen Shanghai transform itself from a gritty crowded city in 1997 to a gritty modern super metropolis today.

NOT SEEN, but lived in and experienced Shanghai

I TOOK A MOST EXCELLENT CLASS AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY’S SUMMER SESSION LAST YEAR: STATS 202 “DATA MINING AND ANALYSIS” TAUGHT BY A GOOGLE GUY.

SO I WAS SLIGHTLY CONFUSED WHEN I WAS SCROLLING THROUGH G-NEWS TO AN ARTICLE FROM THE REGISTER THAT SCHMIDT TELLS COLBERT THAT GOOGLE DOESN’T DATA MINE.

SPECIFICALLY IN THE ARTICLE THE G-CEO SAID:

“We actually don’t do data mining,” Schmidt said. “Our computers go out and they find out everything going on on the web and they figure out what points to each other and that gives us the algorithm, which is called PageRank. And that’s how we decide how to rank the results.”

Google Research head Peter Norvig says PageRank isn’t really that important. But that’s another matter.

AND IN THE CLASS BESIDES LEARNING R, THE MOST EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR POINTED TO DATA MINING TWITTER PROJECTS.

I’M NOT SURE OF THE PRIVACY ISSUES BUT CHECK OUT STATS202.COM TAUGHT AT G-CAMPUS FOR A SET OF LECTURES TAUGHT PREVIOUSLY BY MY INSTRUCTOR’S COLLEAGUE

AND THE CLASS DEMAND WENT UP IN PRICE TO $3500, 2010 FROM APPROX. $2200, 2009
